WE FROM THE SHORE OF THE EUPHRATES

Die Serie ist entstanden anlässlich meiner Beteiligung an der Ausstellung „Das Geheimnis der Dinge“ zum Thema Stillleben. Das „Wir“ aus dem Titel sind Klumpen aus Ton, die laut Maurice Blanchot die alten Sumerer ins Wasser warfen, nachdem sie die Klumpen eingeritzt hatten mit ihren Träumen. Blanchot deutete diese Tonklumpen als Vorläufer des Gedichts. Vielleicht hatte Goethe den gleichen Gedanken, als er um 1815 das Gedicht „Lied und Gebilde“ schrieb: „Schöpft des Dichters reine Hand / Wasser wird sich ballen“.
This series was created in the context of my exhibition participation in “The Secret of Things“ about Still Life. The “We“ in the title are clay lumps which, according to Maurice Blanchot, the antique Sumerians threw into the river after having engraved their dreams into the clay. Blanchot saw in these lumps the origin of poetry. Perhaps Goethe was thinking the same when in c. 1815 he wrote in the poem “Lied und Gebilde”: “in the mould of a poet’s hand water will become a ball“.
